How to adjust the speed of your windscreen wipers

From a sudden splash to a continuous soaking, water on your windscreen can really affect your visibility and, therefore, your safety. That’s why it’s important to know how to adjust the speed of your wipers (and rain sensing wipers) so you can clear your windscreen quickly and efficiently.

  •  The wiper controls are on a stalk, next to your steering wheel.
  • You can operate the controls with your finger. So you don’t have to take your hand off the wheel.
  • Move the stalk up and down. You’ll feel it click into three different positions.
  • TOP TIP: Don’t test the wipers on a dry windscreen: it can damage the blades and scratch the glass.
  • Position 1: In this neutral position, the wipers are ‘off’.
  • Position 2: ‘Bounce’ the stalk down once and the wipers will make a single swipe. This is useful if you get a sudden splash of water on the screen.
  • Position 3: From the ‘off’ position, push the stalk up one notch. It will click and stay in place.
  • The wipers will wipe intermittently to a set timing.
  • Position 4: Push the stalk up to the next notch.
  • The wipers will now swipe continuously.
  • Position 5: Push the stalk up as far as it will go.
  • The wipers will work at high speed.
  • If you set the wipers to work intermittently, you can change their tempo.
  • On the wiper stalk, you’ll find a dial.
  • Turn it up to set a shorter interval between each wipe.
  • Turn it down to set a longer interval between each wipe.
  • Now for your rear wiper.
  • Pull the stalk towards you. The washer and wiper will work together.

After one wash and wipe, the wiper will pause. It will then wipe one more time to clear the window. That’s how easy it is to adjust the speed of your windscreen wipers. But if there’s anything you’re not sure about, you can always refer to your Owner’s Manual, or simply contact your Ford Dealer.

How to locate your towing eye

If you need to know how to find your towing eye and locate your recovery hook, look no further than this short video.

Whether you’re towing, or being towed, it’s important you do it properly. Here’s how:

  • First get your recovery hook from the boot.
  • If your vehicle has a spare tyre, the recovery hook is in a tray underneath.
  • If your vehicle doesn’t have a spare tyre, you’ll find it in the tool tray.
  • Go to the front of your car to find the towing eye cover.
  • Pop off the cover by pushing it firmly on one side.
  • Locate the recovery hook into the hole and turn it anti-clockwise. It must be fully tightened so it doesn’t come loose.
  • Your vehicle is now ready to be towed.
  • There’s a rear towing point, too.
  • By the rear bumper, you’ll find a panel. The panel will be firmly fixed. But it can be removed by hand.
  • TOP TIP: Don’t use tools to remove the panel. You may damage your car’s bodywork or break the fixings.
  • Behind the removable panel you’ll find the recovery hook.

IMPORTANT

  • You must switch the ignition on when vehicle is being towed.
  • Do not exceed 62mph (100km/h).
  • You must carry the recovery hook in your vehicle at all times.

That’s how easy it is to find and use your recovery hook and towing eye.

But if there’s anything you’re not sure about, just ask your Ford Dealer.

How to demist your car’s windows

If you want to remove condensation on the inside of your windows, watch this short video. In just a few minutes, everything will become perfectly clear.

Steamed up windows. Foggy windows. Misted up windows. Condensation on the inside of your windows…

Whatever you call the problem, this video can help you solve it.

Follow the simple, step-by-step instructions and you’ll soon become a skilled steamy window clearer.

  • First, make sure your engine’s running so the heating and ventilation systems work.
  • Does your Ford have a MAX button on your heating and ventilation controls? If so, you can switch everything on at once.
  • The display on your dashboard shows it’s working.
  • If your car doesn’t have a MAX button, no problem. You can demist the windows manually.
  • Turn the fan to full power.
  • Now turn the temperature to the highest setting.
  • Next, turn the air conditioning on.
  • This starts circulating the air and helps remove moisture.
  • Make sure you turn off ‘Recirc’.
  • This directs condensation to the outside of your vehicle.
  • TOP TIP: Open your windows slightly to help with airflow.
  • Make sure the air distribution is pointing to the windscreen.
  • You can also set the fan to blow air towards you.
  • Using this setting, you can point the air vents at the side windows. This will help clear them, too.
  • If your rear window is fogged, simply switch on the heated rear window.

TO SUM UP:

  • Put your heater on full blast.
  • Put your AC ON.
  • Turn your ‘recirc’ OFF.
  • Open the windows slightly.

That’s how easy it is to demist the inside of your windows.

But if there’s anything you’re not sure about, you can always refer to your Owner’s Manual, or simply contact your Ford Dealer.

How to adjust your driving seat and steering wheel

Tall? Short? Medium sized? Find out how to adjust your driver’s seat and steering wheel so they’re perfectly suited to you.

For your comfort and safety, it’s important to set your driving position and steering wheel rake correctly. Here’s how to do it:

  • First, make sure your handbrake’s on and the ignition’s off.
  • Grip the steering wheel and sit upright.
  • Push your bottom to the back of the seat, against the backrest.
  • Reach under the seat for a lever.

  • In the right position, you should be able to push the clutch down.
  • Your legs and arms should be slightly bent.
  • Comfortable? Released the lever? Then rock backwards and forwards slightly.
  • TOP TIP: You’ll probably hear a click when the seat locks safely into place. You’ll feel it, too.
  • Now check the backrest.
  • Put your wrist on top of the steering wheel.
  • Your shoulders should be touching the backrest. If they’re not, you need to change the angle.
  • On the side of the seat you’ll find a dial. Turn this to change the angle of the backrest.
  • Don’t recline the seat back more than 30 degrees.
  • TOP TIP: For your safety, it’s best to have around 25cm between your breastbone and the airbag cover.
  • When that’s right, you need to adjust the seat height.
  • There’s a lever on the side of the seat. Pull or press to change the height of the seat.
  • Again, you should be able to reach the pedals. And when you can see clearly ahead, you’re in the right position.
  • Next, check the height and reach of your steering wheel.
  • Under the steering column, there’s a lever.
  • Pull it down to release the lock.
  • Now move the wheel up or down.
  • The top should be about level with your shoulders.
  • You can move the wheel towards or away from you.
  • In the right position, you can rest your wrists on it.
  • When everything’s set correctly, use the lever to lock the steering column.
  • Finally, time to adjust the head restraint.
  • To change the height, press and hold the locking button.
  • The top should be about level with the top of your head.

DOS AND DON’TS

  • Don’t recline the seatback too far or you’ll be in the wrong position.
  • Do always sit upright against the seatback with your feet flat on the floor.

That’s how easy it is to adjust your driving seat position and the rake of your steering wheel.

How to maximise space in your 5-seat C-MAX

With C-MAX, you don’t have to be an origami expert to fold the seats. Or a champion weightlifter to remove them. In this video, you’ll see why.

Thanks to an ingenious seating system, you can reconfigure the space in your C-MAX to carry almost any load. This is how to do it:

  • First, remove both parts of the luggage cover and push the head restraints to their lowest positions.
  • Remove the seatbelts from the belt guides. Then separate the seatbelt from the buckle and secure it in the seatbelt holder.
  • Gently push the buckles into the seat and pull the side lever to fold each seat flat.
  • WHEN FOLDING OR UNFOLDING THE SEATS, TAKE CARE NOT TO GET YOUR FINGERS CAUGHT.
  • Lift the lower bar to release each seat from the floor and tip them forward.
  • All three seats can be folded independently of one another.
  • To secure the seats in place, pull out the bungee cords and attach them to the front head restraints.
  • For even more space, the rear seats can be removed completely.
  • First detach the bungee cords. Angle the seat at roughly 45° and push down both red levers to open the locking mechanism.
  • THE REAR SEATS ARE HEAVY. TO AVOID INJURY, TAKE CARE WHEN LIFTING THE SEATS.
  • To put the seat back just reverse the process.
  • Lift the red levers up and check the jaws are fully open.
  • Line the seat up with the locks, then click it back in place.
  • Now push both red levers up to secure the seat.
  • MAKE SURE THE SEATS ARE FULLY ENGAGED IN THE LATCHES.
  • Before folding them down, depress the lower bar underneath each seat and check the latches are in the extended position.
  • Push each seat back in place. Then, pull the levers to lift each seat back up.

That’s how to maximise space in your 5-seat Ford C-MAX.

How to check & top up your oil level

Checking your car’s oil level and topping it up. When you’ve watched this video, you’ll be able to do it standing on your head.

Engine oil is essential to keeping your car running smoothly and efficiently. Here’s how to check it.

  • Before you start, you’ll need a lint free cloth and the correct engine oil for your car.
  • It’s good to have oil at the ready: in your boot or at home.
  • If the oil level’s low, you’ll see a warning symbol on your dashboard. If you do, pull over and stop somewhere safe. Or drive to the nearest petrol station.
  • Park on flat ground. You’ll get a more accurate oil level reading.
  • First, make sure your handbrake’s on and your ignition’s off.
  • Wait around 10 minutes for the engine to cool. Then open your bonnet.
  • Reach under the dash and pull the lever.
  • The bonnet will pop open.
  • Lift the bonnet slightly and feel the release catch. Slide it to the left.
  • Lift the bonnet fully, then prop it up safely.
  • TOP TIP: Don’t open your bonnet in a high wind.
  • Look inside the engine bay for the dipstick.
  • It has a brightly coloured handle.
  • Pull the dipstick out, then wipe it on a lint free cloth so the end is oil free.
  • TOP TIP: Use disposable gloves if you can.
  • Push the dipstick back: all the way in. Pull it out again and look closely at the end.
  • You’ll see two notches. These indicate the minimum level and the maximum level. The right amount is somewhere between the two.
  • Is the oil at the minimum level? You’ll need to put more in, immediately.
  • TOP TIP: If you haven’t got oil with you, don’t drive off. Walk to get some or call for roadside assistance.
  • To top up your oil, uncrew the filler cap. It’s marked with the same symbol as your dashboard.
  • Slowly pour in some oil using a funnel to help avoid spillages.
  • TOP TIP: To avoid overfilling, pour in small amounts of oil at a time.
  • Keep checking the level with the dipstick.
  • When you’re finished, screw the cap back on firmly. Now close the bonnet.
  • Hold it up with one hand and release the strut with the other.
  • Tuck the strut back out of the way. Let the bonnet down, then about 30 cm from the body, drop it to lock it.
  • TOP TIP: Don’t push the bonnet down to lock it: you might dent your lovely car.
  • Finally, just check the bonnet is flush to the body.

That’s how easy it is to check and top up your oil.

But if there’s anything you’re not sure about, just ask your Ford Dealer.

And if you find this video useful, check out the others in our ‘How to…’ series: it’s designed to help you keep your Ford in top condition and make best use of its many features.

IMPORTANT

The wrong oil could invalidate your warranty. So always use oil recommended for your car.

Do not remove the filler cap when the engine is running.

Do not add oil further than the maximum mark.

Oil levels above the maximum mark may cause engine damage.

Soak up any spillages immediately with an absorbent cloth.

How to clean your alloy wheels

You only need two things to keep your alloy wheels clean: the right cleaning products and a little bit of elbow grease. Discover how best to use them both.

If you want to keep your alloy wheels looking great, you need to keep them clean. Here’s how to do it:

  • First, make sure the ignition’s turned off and give your wheels time to cool.
  • Using soapy water and a soft sponge, wash off the worst of the dirt.
  • TOP TIP. Industrial cleaners are a real ‘no-no’. Use a shampoo made for the job.
  • Use a tyre brush to reach between the spokes. Or an old toothbrush will do.
  • For tar spots, use a tar removing spray.
  • Now, jet wash or hose away any remaining grime.
  • A tyre cleaner will help keep your tyres looking their best, too.
  • Finally, dry everything with a soft cloth or chamois leather.

That’s how easy it is to clean your alloy wheels.

How to check your tyre tread

Learn how to become an expert tyre tread checker with our handy video guide.

Your tyres are the only parts of your car that touch the road. So it’s vital they have the right amount of tread. But if you’re not sure how to check your tyre tread depth, this is how to do it:

  • First, make sure your handbrake’s on and the ignition’s off.
  • Turn the steering to full lock for full view of the tyre.
  • On the sidewall, look for ‘TWI’ (Tread Wear Indicator).
  • TOP TIP: Some manufacturers use different symbols, so always check.
  • Above TWI, you’ll see little blocks. These are the Tread Wear Indicators.
  • If the tread is level with the Indicators, it’s at its legal minimum depth. Your tyre needs changing immediately!
  • TOP TIP: The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm. But for your safety, the depth should be no less than 3mm.
  • Your tyre may have a bald spot, so check for wear in different places.
  • There’s another way to check the tread.
  • The bevelled edge of a 20p coin is 3mm deep.
  • If you can’t see that edge, the tread is OK.
  • For more accurate checks, get a manual or digital tyre depth gauge. They’re easy to use.
  • Don’t forget to look in different places around the tyre.
  • TOP TIP: If you change tyres from front to rear, it can help them last longer. Just ask your Ford Dealer.

That’s how easy it is to check your tyre tread.

But if there’s anything you’re not sure about, just ask your Ford Dealer.

How to adjust your tyre pressure

Not quite sure how to inflate your tyres to the correct pressures? Watch this short video and, within minutes, you’ll know how to do it the proper way.

Tyre pressure can affect your car’s handling and fuel efficiency, so it needs to be right. Here’s how to adjust the pressures correctly:

  • First, make sure your handbrake’s on and the ignition’s off.
  • Inside your door frame, a chart shows the correct tyre pressures: they’re marked in PSI and BAR.
  • Unscrew the dust caps. And keep them somewhere safe!
  • Use a foot pump to inflate your tyres, or use an air pump machine at a petrol station.
  • TOP TIP: With some machines, you adjust the pressure. Others inflate your tyres automatically when you set the PSI or BAR number.
  • Got a spare tyre?
  • Then it’s worth checking that, too.
  • When you’re finished, don’t forget to screw all your dust caps back on securely.

That’s how easy it is to adjust your Ford’s tyre pressures.

But if there’s anything you’re not sure about, you can always refer to your Owner’s Manual, or simply contact your Ford Dealer.

And if you find this video useful, check out the others in our ‘How to…’ series: it’s designed to help you keep your Ford in top condition and make best use of its many features.

IMPORTANT

Your car may be equipped with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. But this is not a substitute for manually checking tyre pressures. You should periodically check tyre pressures using a pressure gauge. Failure to correctly maintain tyre pressures could increase the risk of tyre failure, loss of control, vehicle rollover and personal injury.

How to check your tyre pressure

Checking your tyre pressures is easy. And that’s good news, because it’s also really important. Learn how to do it now and it’ll soon become second nature.

Tyre pressure can affect your car’s handling and fuel efficiency. So it needs to be right. This is how to check it:

  • First, make sure your handbrake’s on and the ignition’s off.
  • Give the tyres around three hours to cool. It gives a more accurate reading.
  • Inside your door frame, a chart shows the correct tyre pressures: they’re marked in PSI and BAR.
  • Get yourself a tyre pressure gauge. There are manual and digital ones.
  • Unscrew the dust caps on your tyres. And keep them somewhere safe!
  • Press the gauge onto the valve and you’ll hear a little hiss of air.
  • The number shows the pressure.
  • TOP TIP: Tyres at the wrong pressure will wear out faster. They’re also less safe. So check them regularly.
  • Got a spare tyre?
  • Then it’s worth checking that, too.
  • Finally, don’t forget to screw all your dust caps back on.

That’s how easy it is to check your Ford’s tyre pressures.

How to use your Tyre Inflation Kit

If you’ve got a puncture, your tyre will need some first aid. That’s where your Ford Tyre Inflation Kit can come to the rescue. Learn how to use it.

It’s dangerous to drive with a puncture. So if your vehicle doesn’t have a spare wheel, your Tyre Inflation Kit will come in handy. Here’s how to use it:

First, follow these important safety steps:

  1. Stop somewhere away from other traffic. Make sure your handbrake’s on and your ignition’s off.
  2. Turn on your hazard warning lights.
  3. If you need to, set up a warning triangle whilst wearing a high-vis vest.
  • Next, check for damage.
  • Don’t pull out any objects stuck in the tyre, it might make it harder to fix.
  • TOP TIP: If the tear or hole is larger than 6mm, it’s too big to fix. Please call for assistance.
  • You’ll find the Tyre Inflation Kit in the boot.
  • There’s a bottle of sealant and a compressor with hoses attached.
  • Wearing protective gloves, check the sealant is in date.
  • Shake it, peel off the label and stick it somewhere visible. This shows the max speed limit with sealant in the tyre.
  • Unravel the hose in the compressor and connect it to the sealant bottle.
  • Now attach the bottle to the holder on the compressor.
  • Unscrew the dust cap and screw the sealant bottle hose on to the valve.
  • TOP TIP: Ideally, the valve should be towards the top of the tyre. The sealant will work better that way.
  • Plug the power cable into the cigar lighter or auxiliary power socket.
  • Check your car’s recommended tyre pressure. The label is on the inside of your doorframe.
  • Turn on your ignition.
  • TOP TIP: If your engine’s running, the compressor won’t drain power from your battery.
  • Start the compressor.
  • Inflate your tyre, but for no longer than 10 minutes.
  • When you reach the right pressure, switch off the compressor.
  • TOP TIP: The pressure may rise up to 87 PSI (6 bar). But don’t worry, it should drop to normal after about 30 seconds.
  • If your tyre hasn’t inflated after 10 minutes, something’s wrong. Please call for Ford Roadside Assistance.
  • Unscrew the hose. Some sealant might leak out, but that’s normal.
  • Screw the dust cap back on, unplug the power cable and unscrew the sealant.
  • Place it in a plastic bag, if you’ve got one, and put it in the boot.
  • Drive about two miles / three kilometres so the sealant can seal the damaged area.
  • Pull over and check the tyre to make sure the repair has worked. If necessary, top up the pressure with your Inflation Kit.
  • TOP TIP: Notice any vibrations, unsteady steering or noises when driving? Then reduce your speed, or stop and call for Ford Roadside Assistance.
  • Puncture fixed, drive to your nearest Ford Dealer to get a new tyre but don’t drive any further than 125 miles (200 kilometres). The Dealer can safely dispose of your sealant bottle, too.

That’s how to use your Ford Tyre Inflation Kit.

But if there’s anything you’re not sure about, you can always refer to your Owner’s Manual, or simply contact your Ford Dealer.

How to save fuel

When you save fuel, you save money. So for some top, fuel saving tips, take a look at this short video.

Many Ford cars have fuel saving technologies built in. But there are other ways you can save fuel, too. For example:

  • Replacing oil, during servicing, can help your car run more efficiently.
  • Get your Ford Dealer to make sure your wheels are aligned correctly.
  • Use a gauge to check your tyre pressures regularly. The correct PSI and BAR are marked on a chart: it’s inside your door.
  • If there’s any unnecessary weight in your car, take it out and leave it at home.
  • If you don’t need your roof rack or box, take it off.
  • When the air-con’s on, it can use more fuel. So try not to use it too much.
  • When you’re driving, an open window or sunroof can affect your car’s aerodynamics. But closed, they’re more efficient.
  • Also, try to accelerate smoothly, avoid high speeds, and change gear before the engine revs too highly.

That’s how easy it is to save fuel in your Ford.
